AUSTIN, Texas -

State Representative Joe Straus of San Antonio was elected by acclamation as Speaker of the Texas House of Representatives in Austin Tuesday at the state legislature began it’s 83rd session.

Straus said he was “humbled and honored” to accept the leadership role for the third consecutive session.

He said education will be among his top priorities during the 140 day session.

“The goal of education is not to teach children how to pass a test but to prepare them for life,” Straus said during his acceptance speech.

He said that the state’s educational system must be appropriate, reasonable and flexible.

Water is also a key issue the speaker said.

“I encourage the members of this house to take action – bold, substantial action – to address our water needs,” Straus said.

Other hot button issues facing lawmakers this session, most agree, is adopting a transparent budget, and addressing transportation and infrastructure.

Another San Antonio lawmaker will take on a key leadership role this session.

Senator Leticia Van de Putte was sworn in Tuesday as President Pro Tem of the state senate.
