Reps. Castro, Doggett won't attend inauguration ceremony

Castro: Trump shows 'utter lack of respect for so many Americans

SAN ANTONIO – U.S. Reps. Joaquin Castro and Lloyd Doggett said Tuesday they will not attend President-elect Donald Trump's inauguration ceremony.

"I will not attend this year's inauguration ceremony," Castro said in a statement. "However, I will be in Washington to greet constituents who are traveling to our nation's capital for the proceedings. I respect their choice to attend.

"Every American should respect the office of the presidency and the fact that Donald Trump will be the 45th president of the United States. But winning an election does not mean a man can show contempt for millions of Americans and then expect those very people to celebrate him.

"I come from a family and a place, Texas, where respect is a fundamental value -- respect for people regardless of what they look like, where they were born or whether they share your view of the world. Donald Trump has shown an utter lack of respect for so many Americans. His attack on civil rights hero John Lewis is the latest example."

The District 20 congressman is the third Texas lawmaker who will not attend the inauguration.

An hour after later, Rep. Lloyd Doggett also announced he was not attending the ceremony.

"We are sending a message to Mr. Trump. Respect, like Pennsylvania Avenue, is a two-way street. Instead of uniting our country, his continued unprecedented, unpresidential actions are further dividing it," Doggett said. "By repeatedly taking the lowest road, he is not showing respect for the highest office. We are in for a long struggle that must strategically utilize every nonviolent opposition tool available."

Houston-area Rep. Al Green, also a Democrat, said that he will be a no-show. As of Tuesday morning, 42 members of Congress have said that they will not attend.

KSAT 12 News anchor Mark Austin and digital journalist Adrian Garcia will be in the nation's capital covering the inauguration ceremonies.

Look for their coverage beginning Thursday on air and online.
