AUSTIN, Texas -

George P. Bush raised about $ 772,600 and has over $2.8 million in cash on-hand as he tries to win his first political office, Texas land commissioner.

The grandson of one former president and nephew of another raked in more than $3.3 million in donations between November 2012 and the end of this past June. His fundraising slowed considerably in the final six months of 2013, though.

Texas Ethics Commission flings also show Bush spent nearly $680,000 campaigning statewide over the same period.

His only major challenger in the March GOP primary is east Texas businessman David Watts, who closed out 2013 raising just $7,000 and spending more than $16,000.

The race's only major Democrat, former El Paso Mayor John Cook, reported raising $13,000 and spending $17,000.
