S.A. attorney appointed special prosecutor in Perry complaint

Mike McCrum looking at alleged ethics violation

AUSTIN, Texas – A state judge has appointed a San Antonio attorney to act as a special prosecutor to investigate an ethics complaint against Gov. Rick Perry.

District Judge Robert Richardson announced Monday that Mike McCrum would look into a complaint filed by Texans for Public Justice against the governor. The watchdog group says Perry abused his power by threatening to cut funding to the Public Integrity Unit if Travis County District Attorney Rosemary Lehmberg didn't resign. She had plead guilty to driving while intoxicated.

Lehmberg rejected Perry's demand, so he cut off funding to the part of her office responsible for investigating state elected officials. The unit was considering a case involving Perry appointees.

McCrum is a criminal defense attorney and will determine if Perry's threat and veto violated any state laws.
