Program provides seniors with fans to keep cool this summer

Catholic Charities has given out more than 2,000 fans

SAN ANTONIO – Catholic Charities partnered with Jefferson Bank to give fans to about 60 seniors at the Charles Gonzales Senior Community Apartment complex Friday morning.

The temperatures in San Antonio and south Texas are on the rise and so are concerns for the elderly in the community, especially when it comes to staying cool through the summer months.

''We can't leave our seniors out," said Elizabeth Nemeth, with Catholic Charities. “And we just want to keep them healthy and give them quality of life."

"You don't realize how many wonderful people there are out there with a wonderful heart that feel good about helping seniors," said Gloria Mendoza, a fan recipient.

Catholic Charities has already given out 2,500 fans. They’re always looking for more donations.  Jefferson Bank brought in 700 fans.

Many of the seniors rely on fans to keep their electric bills lower, because they’re on a fixed income.

"They have it all set up. They just don't have the means to pay for it, so this is a great opportunity for us to give back to them and make sure everybody stays safe during the really hot months," said Lindsay Armstrong, with Jefferson Bank.

"I need it. I need it for sure," said Yolanda Hernandez, a fan recipient.
