District 3 will have a new councilwoman after Saturday night's election.
Newcomer Rebecca Viagran received 51 percent of the vote to defeat incumbent Leticia Ozuna who finished with 38 percent. Ozuna was appointed to serve on the San Antonio City Council in January of 2012.
On Saturday night, when the last round of numbers came in, Viagran thanked all her supporters. "This is all a community effort so this is not about me," said Viagran. "This is about District 3 and the neighborhoods, and the residents that came together and had their voice heard."
Leticia Ozuna also thanked her supporters and wished Viagran luck with her upcoming term. "This has been an incredible year and a half and I worked very hard, and we ran a great campaign," said Ozuna. "We set the bar in what a city council person can do in just over a year."
Candidate Gabriel Velasquez finished third with about 10 percent of the vote.
