Remains discovered during hospital excavation likely came from old cemetery

Project halted immediately after discovery

SAN ANTONIO – Initial findings indicate that remains discovered at The Children's Hospital of San Antonio's excavation site are likely bone fragments from an old cemetery on the site, hospital officials said Monday.

According to a news release, Bexar County Medical Examiner Dr. Randall Frost was on site Friday and released his initial findings.

Frost determined that the bone fragments found Thursday during the Gardens excavation are ancient.

Hospital officials shared the findings with members of the UTSA Center for Archeological Research, who will visit the site later this week, pending weather conditions.

Frost plans to complete a more thorough evaluation of the remains, hospital officials said.

The excavation was halted immediately after the discovery was made.
