The Austin-American Statesman reported officials with the Texas Department of State Health Services declined to confirm whether Hopkins died from the virus, and they do not release information about individual patients.

KXAN-TV in Austin reported Hopkins tested positive for the West Nile virus in October.

According to the Statesman, state officials usually confirm reported cases of West Nile virus within a few days after they are alerted by medical officials.

Three mosquitoes have tested positive for the virus in northwest Bexar County, according to the Bexar County Public Works Department.

All three mosquitoes were found over the last month and a half in an unincorporated area just north of Shaenfield Road outside Loop 1604.

Some tips to avoid mosquito breeding include:

Drain out any standing water in yards.  Mosquitos can breed in as little water as a capful.

Check flower pots and their trays, pet water dishes, toys, bird feeders.

If there are any pools, reflecting ponds, water play stations or similar water areas, please make sure the water has been chlorinated or treated.

Change out the water or purchase larvicide tablets to treat any standing water.

Use mosquito repellent when spending time outdoors and to take basic precautions to help limit their exposure.
