SAN ANTONIO -

A $5,000 reward is being offered in connection with the hit-and-run death of a 9-year-old girl who was walking to school Wednesday morning.

Police said Tatyana Babineaux was on her way to Larkspur Elementary when she was struck by a pickup truck while crossing the street in the 11000 block of Braesview at 7 a.m.

Tatyana was transported to University Hospital, where she died.

"I just wanted to pick her up and hold her, let her know it was OK, but I couldn't do that. She wasn't breathing," said Vanessa Carrizales, who stopped to help.

Police said the driver left the scene in a pewter Chevrolet Colorado.

Sgt. Tobe Whitley of the San Antonio Police Department said it's possible the driver didn't see Tatyana because the rising sun may have shielded his vision.

"It's very tragic anytime a child gets hurt like this, and the individual not stopping makes it even more tragic," Whitley said.

If caught, the driver faces a charge of failure to stop and render aid-death.

Whitley said the truck has front-end damage, likely on the passenger side. It might also have a damaged grill and headlight.

Anyone with information is urged to call Crime Stoppers at 210-224-STOP (7867).
