18-wheeler at oil facility catches fire, explodes in Frio County

FRIO COUNTY, Texas – First responders in Frio County responded to an oil facility explosion Monday afternoon.

The initial call came in around 4 p.m.

Sheriff's officials said an 18-wheeler hauling an oil product exploded. The driver of the big rig was taken to Frio Regional Hospital and airlifted to a hospital in San Antonio.

His condition was not available.

SKY 12 showed a large plume of smoke visible from several miles away. As of 5:25 p.m. flames were still shooting out near the site. The reported explosion occurred near Highway 85 and FM 1582. That is just outside the town of Pearsall.

Due to the rural location of the explosion, fire officials are letting the fire burn out.
