SAN ANTONIO -

A normally active 12-year-old, Guy Godines remains at University Hospital nearly a month after an alleged drunken driver ruined his summer vacation with his grandparents in Laredo.

His mother, Kiki Godines, said not only were her son's legs broken, he also suffered a skull fracture and moderate brain damage.

"He's not able to speak or do anything on his own right now, but he will eventually. He just needs time to heal," Godines said.

But she said it could be long road to recovery.

Joe Baeza, spokesman for the Laredo Police Department, said Godines and a friend were riding their bikes over the Fourth of July weekend in broad daylight on a residential street.

The boy's mother said he was within blocks of his grandparents' home.

Baeza said Godines allegedly was struck by a minivan driven by 40-year Renato Cardenas, who now faces charges of DWI and injury to a child.

Witnesses said Cardenas tried to run away after allegedly hitting a parked car moments later, but he was quickly caught.

The boy who was about to begin seventh grade at St. George Episcopal School, was airlifted to University Hospital that day.

His mother said it was a miracle her son survived.

"An inch further, a little harder, if he'd landed a different way," she said, and the outcome could have been more tragic.

However, Godines said she credits everyone who helped stabilize the boy despite the extent of his injuries.

"Everybody has been amazing. I really want to give thanks to everybody whose been here and helped us," Godines said.

She said a website, hope4guy.com, was even created to help keep family, friends and others updated about Guy's condition.

Godines said she hopes her son's story will help convince at least one drunk driver of the damage they can cause.

"This should never have happened," Godines mother said. "People should not drink and drive. If they are, just be responsible about it."
