Monday was the first day of school for most San Antonio-area schools.
After a busy summer, second-grader Eva Fredericks was ready to hit the books on her first day of school.
Her mom said preparing her kids a few days before -- by getting them up a little bit earlier -- helped a lot Monday morning.
“It was awesome. We really love the school in the neighborhood and it's a really good community. They're excited and I'm excited for them," said Martha Fredericks.
At Elrod Elementary, in the North Side Independent School District, about 580 kids attended classes.
For this first-grader, her mom said she's excited to finally be getting graded.
"She loved it. She likes her teachers, so it went pretty good, " said Leslie Delacruza.
Elrod Principal Daisy Whisenant said what will keep students at the top of their class is to make sure they stay active during the summer.
Whisenant said, “The teachers sent papers home that they could practice on and play school and everybody likes to play school. That keeps their skills honed."
