SAN ANTONIO - San Antonio firefighter and paramedic Kevin Cyrus, 45, had been placed on administrative duty following his weekend arrest on a charge of drunken driving, according to a statement by the San Antonio Fire Department.

"Upon learning of the offense the San Antonio Fire Department took immediate action and placed him on Administrative Duty pending an administrative investigation and subsequent decision on appropriate disciplinary actions," the statement read.

Fire department spokesman Christian Bove confirmed that Cyrus attended a meeting Tuesday morning with fire Chief Charles Hood regarding the arrest.

A police report about the incident stated that officers were called to the intersection of McArthur View and Mopac Drive shortly after midnight Saturday and found Cyrus asleep behind the wheel of his pickup.

A KSAT 12 News photographer recorded the entire incident, and the video shows the officer spending more than a minute knocking on the driver's side window and rocking the truck back and forth in an attempt to rouse Cyrus. The video shows him eventually emerging from the vehicle, appearing to stumble as he steps out of it.

The police report stated that officers found Cyrus confused about where he was and how he got there, and that his speech was slurred. Cyrus later admitted to them that he had consumed eight beers earlier in the evening, the report stated.

Because of the heavy rain at the time, officers decided against performing the usual field sobriety test. But the report stated that blood tests later showed Cyrus had a blood alcohol level greater than 0.15.

Due to the results of that blood test, Cyrus was booked into jail on an enhanced charged: DWI with a blood alcohol content greater than 0.15.

Bove said Cyrus is a 16-year veteran with the department, and that he works as a firefighter and paramedic at Station 39.

The station, located in the 10700 block of Nacogdoches Road, is about two miles from the site where Cyrus was arrested.
