The fire department honored 30 recent retirees, 29 promotees and handed out eight special  awards to firefighters who went above the call of a duty.

Natividad Rodriguez was one of those eight firefighters. He was injured back in April while fighting a 2–alarm fire at the Castlewood condos on Medical Drive.

Rodriguez was attempting to save a man trapped on the second floor when there was a problem with the ladder.

"I guess it was unhooked so it came down off the balcony as I was trying to rescue the man and I fell approximately 20 feet onto my back,” said Rodriguez.

Rodriguez suffered a C-6 fracture, broke his neck and three ribs.

“We never know what (we’ll) pull up to until we get there so we have to train for all types of incidents. As a firefighters it’s something I want to do,” Rodriguez said.

After three days in the hospital and several months recovering, Rodriguez returned to work in September.
