SAFD hosts soldiers to aid transfer to civilian life

Fire department partners with Army to support soldiers after military

The transition from military to civilian life is not easy.

That is why the San Antonio Fire Department is trying to get members of the Army the support they need when their military careers are over.

More than 50 future soldiers got a firsthand look at what firefighters do Saturday at the fire department's training academy.

They were able to talk with firefighters and see them in action.

Division Chief Danny Gonzalez said one third of the fire department is made up of veterans, so they understand the challenges soldiers face.

"We want to reach out to them, encourage them while they're in the military," said Gonzalez.

This was the first time an event like this has been held.

The fire department offers a mentor program that allows soldiers to stay in touch with firefighters throughout their military careers.
