SAN ANTONIO -

It took the San Antonio Independent School District nearly 16 months to the day to replace former Superintendent Dr. Robert Duron, but the Board of Trustees Monday named the district's interim superintendent to the post.

Dr. Sylvester Perez was appointed to the interim position on February 20, 2012.

The board voted unanimously to officially give him the job Monday. It is effective July 1.

“I look forward to working with the Board of Trustees, District employees, parents, students and community leaders during this critical time in public education in Texas and here at SAISD,” said Dr. Sylvester Perez in a press release. “I’ve seen the level of commitment by our employees, and I know that together, we will overcome the many challenges that still must be met to help SAISD reach a higher level of academics and overall student success.”

In April, the first lone finalist for the job, Dr. Manuel Isquierdo, withdrew from consideration after questions were raised about his past, including owing the IRS more than $152,000 dollars in back due taxes and being named in three liens in two different states since 2009.
