San Antonio area teen to participate in Scripps National Spelling Bee

Alex Iyer, 13, will compete against 44 other spellers in Washington D.C.

SAN ANTONIO – The city of San Antonio finally has its first representative in the annual Scripps National Spelling Bee held in Washington D.C.

Alex Iyer, 13, a 7th grader at the Geneva School of Boerne, will compete against 44 other spellers from around the world for the right to be crowned world champion.

After three rounds of perfect spelling and acing his written vocabulary exam, Alex was announced a finalist out of 172 semi-finalists and 284 nationwide spellers.

 Alex, the regional spelling bee champ, enjoys music and playing chess in his spare time, and is a member of the National Junior Honor Society.

The  Scripps National Spelling Bee competition will be aired live from the Gaylord Marriott Hotel in D.C. on ESPN2 starting at 9 a.m. Thursday.

ESPN2 will also air highlights and behind the scenes footage beginning at 8 p.m. that same day.
