SAN ANTONIO -

A young boy who died after he was trapped inside a burning home in near northwest San Antonio has been identified by the Bexar County Medical Examiner.

San Antonio firefighters pulled Ryan Rios, 9, from a home on Beverly Drive early Sunday morning.

Fire crews arrived at the home around 6 a.m. and were told a young child was inside. Firefighters took an offensive approach and located Rios in a back bedroom filled with heavy smoke.

Rios was rushed to University Hospital, but died a short time later.

Christian Bove with the San Antonio Fire Department said there were about six other residents, including children, who made it out safe, but firefighters were shaken up, knowing the 9-year-old did not survive.

"Right now our hearts are with this young boy's family," said Bove. "It hits our firefighters especially hard when it is a young child. You never want to see anyone perish in a fire, especially when we are dealing with young children."

Bove said the fire originated in the garage, but the arson unit was still investigating a cause Sunday morning.
