"It's a terrible loss for us as a family. It's a loss, obviously, for the city of San Antonio and we're just, obviously, saddened by her passing,” Robert Gonzales, Meza’s brother, said. “But I think her contributions, obviously, (are) telling of what she did."

She led the local Democratic Party in 2011 and 2012.

Multiple elected Democrats from across South Texas attended the funeral, including U.S. Reps. Joaquin Castro and Lloyd Doggett. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Julian Castro also attended.

Meza worked under Henry Cisneros when he was the secretary for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

She graduated from high school in 1971. She moved to San Antonio and graduated from St. Mary’s in 1977.

Most recently Meza had been campaigning to get Hillary Clinton elected president.

Joaquin Castro read a statement from Clinton.
