San Antonio to end Pride Month with day full of events

Crosswalk chalk art event, festival, parade scheduled on Saturday

SAN ANTONIO – Everything is bigger in Texas, including San Antonio’s Pride “Bigger Than” Texas Parade and Festival.

The first event was held in 2004, and since then, has grown to over 80 vendors and over 100 parade entries.

The day’s events get started at 9 a.m. with a "Chalk It Up" event. The community is welcomed to join as the Evergreen and Main Street intersection is changed to rainbow colors.

The event has gotten a lot of attention after a similar event that's held on Houston Street.

Organizers said the event could be a permanent change to the Evergreen and Main Street intersection in the future.

“This is just way one to beautify the strip,” event organizer Rosie Gonzalez said. “The Pride planning committee is already in talks with city council, and we are ready to help fund the project.”

After the "Chalk It Up" event, opening ceremonies for the festival will take place at 10 a.m. followed by the festival from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m.

During the festival, Gonzalez will provide free wedding ceremonies at Crockett Park.

After the festival at 8:30 p.m., the "Running of the Queens" will take place and then the parade starts at 9 p.m.

This year, the parade will feature four grand marshals, including newly-elected Mayor Ron Nirenberg.
