Along with the title, Gaunt won a vacation for two to Maui.

According to PETA, Gaunt is a Navy veteran who was deployed three times with the USS Carl Vinson.  He works for Joint Base San Antonio Fire Emergency Services at a fire station on Fort Sam Houston.

He decided to become a vegan after watching a documentary called “Forks Over Knives.”

PETA said Gaunt's favorite meal is cauliflower barbecue wings with vegan ranch dipping sauce and said he loves to cook vegan meals for his fellow firefighters.

"I'm living proof that a firefighter can save animals while both on and off duty—and stay strong through healthy vegan meals," Gaunt said.

PETA named both a male and female winner. Arnisha Keaton, an Army Reserve chemist from Atlanta, took this year's female title.
