SAN ANTONIO -

Families are hitting the highways to get to their Fourth of July destination.

For several car loads of people at one gas station along Interstate 37 near San Antonio Wednesday morning, the popular destination was the beach.

Parents packed chairs, beach bags and floats into the back of their cars, but their focus was on keeping the other cargo happy and quiet.

"Keep them up real late, and get them up real early, that's how I keep them. Sleep the whole way," said Bo Barrow, who was taking his three boys from Junction to South Padre Island.

For the Perez family, keeping Emory happy from San Antonio to Corpus Christi was all about entertainment, like her DVD player and tablet.

"If she's happy, we're happy," her mother said. "It's a long trip for a 6-year-old. 'Are we there yet? Are we there yet?'"

All of the parents brought up that nagging question.

One mom had a solution, at least for her trip down I-37 to Corpus Christi.

"I told my daughter that she needs to count down. We're at 130 exit, and she's got to wait until we get to zero. So then she can count down and not have to ask us continually, 'Are we there yet?'" Darcy Bridgeman said.

The Bridgemans are from Colorado, so the kids have never been to the beach. They're hoping it will be a big surprise when they get there.

"My 4-year-old thought it was going to be a surprise like (in a) McDonald's (Happy Meal). I said, 'It's a little bigger than that,'" Bridgeman said.
