SAN ANTONIO -

A man suffered a gunshot wound to the face while he tried to break into an apartment late Sunday night, San Antonio police say.

Officers responded to call for shots fired just before 9 p.m. at an apartment complex in the 300 block of Merida Street west of downtown.

Police say the tenant told them four people were attempting to break into his apartment and he warned them he was armed with a shotgun.

The tenant claimed the group did not listen to his warning so he opened fire, and apparently shot a 24-year-old man in the face.

The gunshot victim was driven to Metro Methodist Hospital, but then transferred to San Antonio Military Medical Center in critical condition.

Police said the three people who were with the gunshot victim attempted to leave the hospital, but were taken into custody by SAPD officers.

Police were also questioning the tenant about the shooting and charges were unknown as of 6 a.m. Monday.
