SAN ANTONIO -

A man who San Antonio police believe was behind a series of elderly theft crimes, is accused of posing as a door-to-door newspaper salesman and stealing a woman’s wallet.

Gabriel Caldera, 34, was arrested Monday in connection with the July 30 crime. However, police believe he committed at least two other similar thefts recently, an arrest warrant affidavit stated.

In the most recent case, a woman told police Caldera knocked on her door and told her he was selling subscriptions to the San Antonio Express News, the affidavit stated.

The woman said she was skeptical so she called the newspaper’s office which confirmed there was a promotion like that underway.

After the phone call seemed to back up Caldera’s story, the woman said she trusted him a bit more and agreed to the subscription, the affidavit stated.

She said after she had completed the paperwork and given Caldera $2.00 in cash to cover the subscription fee, he complained about being thirsty and asked for water, the affidavit stated.

The woman told police when she went to get him a bottle of water, Caldera came into her home and took her wallet off the sofa, the affidavit stated.

Police said they have had at least two similar theft reports involving elderly victims recently.
