SAN ANTONIO -

A man was struck and killed after he got out of his car that had just crashed into a guardrail on Loop 1604 at the Babcock Road overpass.

The accident happened just before 5 a.m. Wednesday, and was the first traffic fatality to occur in San Antonio in the new year.

The victim carried no identification and was described only as a Hispanic male.

Police said his car struck the guardrail on the overpass and the driver apparently stepped into the roadway to assess damage to his car.

A Volkswagen traveling eastbound on Loop 1604 struck the motorist. The driver was not able to stop in time to avoid the accident, according to police.

The driver notified police and remained at the scene until officers arrived. Police said he was not intoxicated, was cooperative and will not likely face any charges.
