SAN ANTONIO -

A 49-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the theft of nearly $5,000 from a woman he met online.

According to an arrest warrant affidavit, the woman reported the crime on Jan. 17, telling San Antonio police that Joseph Vogel had disappeared along with about $5,000 from her home safe.

The woman told police she and Vogel had met online and began dating. She said she allowed him to remain in her home while she went to work on Jan. 17.

When she returned home, both Vogel and the money were missing, the affidavit stated.

The woman said Vogel called her at some point later, admitting that he had left town with her money and that he had relapsed, falling back into drug and alcohol addiction, the affidavit stated.

Police said the woman was able to convince Vogel to return to San Antonio, and he surrendered to police on Thursday.

The affidavit stated that he told police he had gone on a "binge" and had blacked out.

But he told police he did recall taking the money without the woman's permission, the affidavit stated.
