San Pedro Creek to be transformed to reflect history of San Antonio

Groundbreaking ceremony slated for Thursday

SAN ANTONIO – San Pedro Creek will be transformed to reflect the history of San Antonio and become a new location for economic development.

Groundbreaking on the big project begins Thursday.

"It's converting a ditch, which is what it is now, into this amazing space," District 1 Councilman Roberto Trevino said.

The city, Bexar County and the San Antonio River Authority are coming together to restore San Pedro Creek.

What many don't know is that the creek is the site of the original Valero de San Antonio Mission.

"That's where the Native Americans were, where the Spaniards settled and then the community grew from there," Precinct 2 Bexar County Commissioner Paul Elizondo said.

The restoration project is part of the city's tricentennial and restoring the city's history. It will be transformed into 4 miles of trails and 11 acres of landscaped area.

"What we're doing with this project. we're creating this great linear park along downtown," Trevino said.

The public space will feature art, entertainment and businesses.

Work on phase one of the project begins this year, with a groundbreaking ceremony slated for Thursday.

"It will be unique to the West Side of San Antonio," Elizondo said.
