SAN ANTONIO -

A district attorney's investigator accidentally shot himself at the San Antonio Police Academy, police officials said.

Police Chief William McManus said the accident occurred on the firing range.

The investigator was doing a qualifying test and had just finished firing and had holstered his gun when it accidentally went off.

"The bottom line is it was an accidental shooting while the investigator was trying to clear his weapon," McManus said. "(It was) unfortunate, but it happened."

The investigator was taken to a hospital and is expected to recover.
