SAN ANTONIO -

A blood drive coordinated by San Antonio police and the San Antonio Military Medical Center is being held today. The drive was organized after the shooting of Officer Robert Deckard Dec. 8.

The blood drive is taking place at Ft. Sam Houston's Akeroyd Blood Donor Center at 1240 Harney Rd. The hours are 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Police have posted directions and information on their Facebook page.

For military ID card holders (donors will need to show their military ID to security personnel):

  1. Enter Fort Sam Houston through the IH-35/Benz Engleman entry control point.
  2. At the traffic light (Garden Ave./Schofield Rd.), go straight through the intersection.
  3. Go one block to Marvin Wood Rd. (flashing pedestrian crosswalk), turn right onto Marvin Wood Rd.
  4. Take the second parking lot entrance on the right.
  5. Designated parking on the east side of the building or at the rear.
  6. Walk up the ramp into the building.

For non-military personnel (donors will need to present a valid driver's license and/or proof of insurance at the main gate):

  1. Enter Fort Sam Houston through the IH-35/Walters St. entrance.
  2. At the traffic light, yield right onto Wilson Way. NOTE: Wilson Way will change its name to Garden Ave.
  3. At the traffic light (Garden Ave./Schofield Rd.), turn left onto Schofield Rd. (fire station will be to your right front).
  4. Go one block to Marvin Wood Rd. (flashing pedestrian crosswalk), turn right onto Marvin Wood Rd.
  5. Take the second parking lot entrance on the right.
  6. Designated parking on the east side of the building or the rear.
  7. Walk up the ramp into the building.

Once there,

  • Log in or create a personal donor profile
  • Select donate blood
  • Enter sponsor code: SAPD
  • Select blood drive location, date and time
