SAPD: Man abused boy, 4, caused brain injury

Police: Felix Justin Gonzales, 21, was babysitting girlfriend's son

SAN ANTONIO – A 21-year-old man who was left to care for his girlfriend's 4-year-old son is accused of abusing the boy and causing a serious brain injury.

Felix Justin Gonzales was booked into the Bexar County Jail Tuesday on a charge of injury to a child causing serious bodily injury.

An arrest warrant affidavit stated that San Antonio police found out about Ezekial Campa's injury June 29 when he was brought, unresponsive, to Children's Hospital of San Antonio.

The affidavit stated that the child had bruises and scratches on his face, legs and back as well as a brain injury.

Initially he had to be placed on a ventilator, but now is recovering in a hospital, the affidavit stated.

Detectives investigating the case determined that Gonzales had been left to care for Ezekial and one other child while their mother, his girlfriend, was working.

The affidavit stated that Gonzales told police that during that time, he had left the child alone for about five hours.

However, detectives said the boy's injuries were too severe to have been caused by himself or another child, the affidavit stated.

They said they also spoke to a witnesses who claimed to have seen Gonzales abusing Ezekial, the affidavit stated.

The document also stated that the boy appeared to be malnourished and have untreated scabies. It did not mention whether other people might face charges.
