SAWS distributes rain barrels to 3,400 customers

Barrels can be used to water plants

SAN ANTONIO – The San Antonio Water System on Saturday distributed rain barrels to 3,400 customers as part of a conservation effort.

Each barrel holds 50 gallons of water. That’s about the amount the average San Antonian uses inside every day.

"Your plants love rain water. Everyone knows your plants perk up when it rains. It's not just because they like water. They love that soft rainwater that comes from the sky. So when it rains a lot in San Antonio, you can save some of it in your rain barrel. Then when it gets dry again, use it on the plants,” said Karen Guz, conservation director for SAWS.

The barrels were given to customers who preordered them. Due to high demand, none are currently available.
