Two cities in this region are ranked among the top 50 on a list of the safest cities in Texas.

The list was compiled by a security company called Safe Wise, and took into account data from the FBI’s 2011 Uniform Crime Report, among other things.

According to information on the company’s website, Schertz had no murders or arson cases during that year, and 70 burglaries.

It was ranked as No. 28 on the list of 50 cities.

"I was excited to see we made the top 50 list. I wasn't surprised," said Michael Carpenter, mayor of Schertz.

Carpenter said many people deserve credit for the city’s success, and it did not come overnight.

“This is something that we've been working on for many years. It's a combination of work from the police department, the marshal's service, the Schertz Citizens Patrol, all of the neighborhood watch programs," he said.

Megan Kelly, out for a morning stroll along Schertz Parkway with her mother, said she agrees with the study, and rarely has reason to worry.

"I come running around 10 or 11 at night on this road and have never had problems," Kelly said. “I’ve never felt uncomfortable.”

Paula Goos, who has lived in Schertz for the past 15 years, said her mind is often put to rest by the constant visual reminders of safety that she sees: police patrol cars.

"They patrol all the time. They patrol for speed, they're involved in community events," she said.

The study also recognized Schertz for being especially family oriented.

It said the city’s low property taxes make home ownership affordable, and its cost of living is below the national average.

Kerrville, which made No. 42 on that list, had no rapes, 10 robberies and 24 motor vehicle thefts in 2011, the study stated.

The study said that Kerrville is full of community pride, and its outdoors and recreational opportunities make it especially attractive.
