SAN ANTONIO -

A security guard was hospitalized after he was stabbed during a robbery late Thursday night.

San Antonio police said the incident happened around 11 p.m. at the Kiolbassa Sausage Plant in the 1300 block of South Brazos Street.

Police said the security guard, 52-year-old Clifton Wallace, approached 27-year-old Elton Anthony Branch, who he suspected of breaking into a vehicle.

"The security guard was familiar with the property he was supposed to be patrolling, and he did notice that one of the cars had a light on inside of it that didn't belong. So the security guard did the right thing, and went up and investigated," said San Antonio police Sgt. Javier Salazar.

The pair got into a fight and Branch stabbed Wallace in the stomach, San Antonio police said.

Wallace was taken to University Hospital for treatment.

"Two witnesses that saw what had happened ... give chase to the suspect, and they were able to catch up to him. At one point, one of the witnesses actually became involved in a short struggle with the suspect as well," Salazar said.

The witness wasn't hurt. Branch escaped, but the witnesses pointed police in the right direction and he was arrested.

Police found less than a gram of cocaine in his front pocket and a car stereo remote.

Branch was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, burglary of a vehicle and possession of narcotics.
