Seguin City Council bans use of landfills on aquifer

Vote a direct move in opposition of Post Oak Landfill

SEGUIN, Texas – The city of Seguin's elected officials once again said no to the Post Oak Landfill.

On Tuesday night, the City Council passed a resolution by a 7-1 vote that bans city contracts with companies that plan to use a landfill over an aquifer.

Signs opposing the landfill are a common sight in Guadalupe County. People in the area say it's not that they don't see a need, but rather they don't want to put themselves or other people's health at risk.

"This is a potential for contaminating the water supply that we provide," Schertz-Seguin Local Government Corporation General Manager Alan Cockerell said.

City leaders said the approval of the resolution proves the city is committed to protecting its citizens from potential harm.

The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality should decide by this fall whether or not the Post Oak Landfill can move forward, Seguin City Manager Douglas Faseler said.

Faseler showed KSAT-12 the material the city believes would be used as the geosynthetic liner between waste and the Carizzo-Wilcox aquifer.

Although Seguin is 12 miles away from the proposed landfill site, the resolution tells the owner the city is not on the list of potential customers.

KSAT-12 contacted the Post Oak Clean Green, Inc. owner Tom Funderberg and his lawyer, but has not heard back as of Wednesday afternoon.
