An off-duty Bexar County sheriff's deputy was assaulted by a suspected shoplifter Wednesday evening.

A sergeant with the sheriff's office said the deputy attempted to take the 16-year-old suspect into custody around 6 p.m. outside a Walmart in the 4000 block of North Foster Road.

The teen then attacked the deputy and ran into a neighborhood across the street.

The teen was found and arrested a short time later. A 20-year-old suspect was also arrested inside the store, sheriff's deputies said.

Sgt. Frank Bellino with the Bexar County Sheriff's Office said the charges pending on the 16-year-old were resisting arrest, evading on foot and theft.

The other suspect had a county warrant out for his arrest. The injured deputy was not transported to the hospital and suffered minor injuries, officials said.
