The San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce has proposed a name change for San Antonio International Airport to honor former mayor Henry Cisneros.

The proposal was floated during the group's annual gala Saturday night. Other major landmarks in San Antonio are named for former mayors, including the Lila Cockrell Theater and Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center.

Cisneros was mayor of San Antonio from 1981 to 1989. His tenure saw the approval of the Alamodome by San Antonio voters, as well as economic development including the arrival of SeaWorld San Antonio and Six Flags Fiesta Texas, and the visit of Pope John Paul II in 1987.
