SAN ANTONIO -

Texas House Speaker Joe Straus formally kicked off his race for re-election in Texas House District 121 Tuesday night in San Antonio.

Rep. Straus (R) San Antonio held a campaign cookout at The Barn Door on North New Braunfels Avenue.

Straus said he is proud of the accomplishments of the Texas House, but there is still a lot of work that needs to be done.

"We took great strides to tackle water shortage. We have great issues with transportation ahead of us that need to be tackled. Education made great reforms in the last session by reducing excessive testing in schools but so much more needs to be done for the five million kids in public schools," said Straus.

Republican conservative Matt Beebe is Straus' opponent in the election. Beebe is a veteran of the United States Air Force and small business owner.

Early voting for the primary election begins on Feb. 18. The primary is set for March 4.

Texas House District 121 includes the Bexar County communities of Alamo Heights, Olmos Park, Terrell Hills and northeastern San Antonio.
