Spring Break gas cheapest in 6 years

Road trip to South Padre to cost $29 less than last year

SAN ANTONIO – Despite recent price jumps at the pump, road-trippers will see the cheapest Spring Break gas prices in six years.

"To see $2.15, I'm not complaining. I'm not complaining," said Billy Graham, who was filling up Monday at the Murphy USA on Austin Highway.

He's planning to do a little traveling.

"I plan to adventure out to different state parks," he said.

Popular Spring Break excursions will be more affordable than years past, at least as far as fuel is concerned.

Families piling into the SUV and headed to the beaches in Corpus Christi will pay about $33 for gas this year, according to AAA's fuel cost calculator.

That same trip would have cost closer to $48 last year.

A roundtrip to South Padre Island will take $67 this year, compared to $96 last year.

Spring-breakers making to trek to the slopes of Ruidoso, N.M., can expect pay $135 in gas for the same mid-sized SUV. That's approximately $60 less than last year.

And families traveling all the way to Orlando to see Mickey Mouse, can expect to put $269 into the same tank, $116 less than a year ago.

Daniel Velasco is planning a road trip to El Paso to see his family.

"Hopefully, I can make it there on $40," he said.

According to the calculator, his Subaru should get there for about $30.

Prices have risen 43 cents in the past month, and analysts say drivers can expect the increases to continue into April.
