SAN ANTONIO -

Staff at San Antonio Independent School District's Franklin Elementary greeted students with a boxing ring and trophies for the first day of school on Monday.

Principal Eduardo Davila said he hopes the welcome makes kids want to be at school.

"This is just a way to motivate the students. We want the students to feel happy. We want the students to feel nourished. We want the students to be excited about coming to school," he said.

Several of the teachers dressed up as sports heroes, and Davila led students up to a mirror inside the ring, where they could look into the "face of a champion."

Some of the parents who watched their kids climb into the ring said the big fuss over the first day of school works.

"It makes her want to get up in the morning to come to school and see the principal, see her teachers, her friends, and keep coming every day," Vanessa Lopez said.

"It felt great," Maria Alvarez said.
