Sunday is National Ice Cream Day

Texas among top ice cream-loving states

SAN ANTONIO – Some may not need a whole day to celebrate ice cream. The frozen, sweet treat gets its own unofficial holiday today.

In 1984, President Ronald Reagan proclaimed July "National Ice Cream Month" and the third Sunday in July "National Ice Cream Day."

At the time, he said, "The ice cream industry generates approximately $3.5 billion in annual sales and provides jobs for thousands of citizens. Indeed, nearly ten percent of all the milk produced by the United States dairy farmers is used to produce ice cream, thereby contributing substantially to the economic well-being of the Nation's dairy industry." Yahoo! has been keeping track of ice cream-related searches - done mostly by women (56%, according to the search engine).

Yahoo! identified the top ice cream flavors by search:

  • Strawberry
  • Banana
  • Chocolate
  • Coconut Milk
  • Peach

Some searchers are also identifying frozen trends, including Captain Ice Cream (featured on ABC's "The Shark Tank"); the game Bad Ice Cream; and Mr. Green Tea Ice Cream - high-end, exotic desserts.
