SAN ANTONIO -

A 32-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the brutal beating of an older man whom he believes hit him with his car. Roman Martinez, 32, has been charged with injury to elderly.

The beating left the 78-year-old victim unable to walk on his own, according to an arrest warrant affidavit.

The affidavit stated the victim told San Antonio police he was pumping gas at a station in the 3800 block of West Avenue last Tuesday when Martinez walked up and accused him of hitting him with his car. The victim said Martinez became angry after he denied it.

He said the suspect began hitting him and knocked him to the ground, then kicked him in the head and body after he fell, the affidavit stated.

A stranger eventually stepped in and stopped the beating, according to the affidavit. Officers who responded to the scene were able to locate and arrest Martinez, the affidavit stated.

Detectives said they showed the victim a photo lineup and he identified Martinez as the person who beat him.

The affidavit stated the victim is in a nursing rehabilitation facility and unable to walk without assistance, as a result of the beating.
