SAN ANTONIO -

A man was arrested Monday morning for allegedly stealing copper from a South Side business, but faces other charges because his children were with him as he committed the crime, San Antonio police said.

The attempted copper theft took place just before 1 a.m. at a vacant business in the 1700 block of SE Military Drive.

An officer was parked in a vacant lot writing a report when he heard noises and noticed broken glass, police said.

The officer investigated and saw the suspect placing scrap metal inside a trailer. The suspect fled on foot and was caught about a block away.

During the chase, another officer noticed two young children running after the suspect. Police said the suspect's kids had been waiting in his pickup truck.

A woman was also inside the building and arrested as well.

The male suspect is expected to be charged with metal theft, burglary, possession of a stolen trailer, evading arrest and two counts of child endangerment.

There is no word what charges the female suspect may face. The names of both suspects have not been released.

Police said the children, ages 6 and 9, were picked up by the suspect's ex-wife.
