SAN ANTONIO -

A suspect identified as Raymond Ortiz, 40, faces a murder charge in connection with the death of a man whose body was discovered in a field in west San Antonio.

San Antonio police said an autopsy shows the victim, identified as Jesse James Perez, 29, died of blunt force trauma to the head and strangulation.

In an arrest warrant affidavit, detectives said an acquaintance of the suspect came forward June 21-- two days after Perez's body was found in a field in the 200 block of Tyson Street-- and told them she had information about the case.

The affidavit stated that the woman told them Ortiz confessed to her that he had gotten into an argument with Perez and then used vise grips to beat him in the head repeatedly.

Police believe Perez had been killed several days before his body was found, the affidavit stated.

Ortiz was booked into the Bexar County jail Saturday on a charge of murder.
