Man dies after officer-involved shooting on West Side, police say

SAN ANTONIO – A man is dead after he was shot by a San Antonio Park Police officer on the West Side, police said.

The officer-involved shooting happened Thursday night near the 200 block of North Zarzamora Street.

Police were interviewing witnesses and collecting evidence about 10 p.m.

Authorities said it seems like the officer followed protocol and was forced to shoot the man only he came after the officer with a knife.

The park police officer was flagged down about 8:30 p.m. He said he saw a man assaulting his girlfriend. The man then pulled out the knife and went after officer.

The officer then fired his stun gun. Chief McManus said that wasn’t enough to stop the man.

"(The officer) then resorted to the use of his firearm and shot the suspect multiple times in the upper torso. He was transported, and I understand he was in critical condition. This is witness reports, so that's what we know right now," McManus said.

The man was taken to a local hospital, where he later died.

The 8-year veteran will be placed on administrative duty.
