SAN ANTONIO -

San Antonio police have arrested a man accused of taking his own pictures with a cell phone he stole, then inadvertently uploading them to the internet.

La Vorne Bennett, 23, was arrested Thursday on a charge of aggravated robbery.

Police had circulated the “selfies,” or self-portraits of a then-unidentified man to local media outlets earlier this month.

They said the man in the pictures was wanted in connection with an armed robbery.

According to an arrest warrant affidavit, the 22-year-old victim told police he answered an ad on Craigslist last month about an iPhone 5 that was for sale.

He said when he met with the man who posted the ad, he instead was robbed at gunpoint of his own cell phone.

The affidavit stated that the victim later bought another phone and used it to access pictures from his old phone which had been stored online.

The victim noticed the photos of the man who robbed him and turned them over to police, the affidavit stated.

After the pictures aired on television, police said they received a Crime Stoppers tip identifying Bennett as the man in the photos.
