Suspect with 8 warrants for car burglaries in Alamo Heights behind bars

Investigators in other cities tying David Cox to crime in their area

ALAMO HEIGHTS, Texas – UPDATE: On Wednesday, KSAT learned from Alamo Heights police that David Cox is behind bars -- on federal charges.

Though he still listed as "at large" on the Bexar County system, Cox was arrested three months ago on other charges. That was new information to both AHPD and Kyle police.

A man suspected of being a serial car burglar has been on the run for about a year now and is being sought by authorities in at least two cities. David Cox has 11 warrants out for his arrest. Eight of them are in Alamo Heights for car burglaries.

"It definitely gets our attention," said Lt. Cindy Pruitt, with the Alamo Heights Police Department.

Cox is suspected of carrying out at least eight vehicle burglaries last April. It's a year later and he's still on the streets. Pruitt said he's been busy.

"I've spoke with departments in Kyle, Boerne, and so this particular individual has been making his way around," Pruitt said.

On Monday, Kyle Police named Cox the suspect in a car burglary from August.

Records show that during the original rash of burglaries in Alamo Heights on April 24, Cox was found hiding near a car filled with stolen items. He was arrested but was released when police couldn't connect him to the car. Once they did, the cases were filed and the warrants were issued.

The car belonged to someone else and was impounded. Pruitt said there was an indication that someone else was in the car that night, but police did not find anyone.

Police reports show the majority of the cars burglarized in the Alamo Heights area were unlocked.

"I was always taught to lock my car. It's always something that's just second nature, but I'm not surprised. There's a lot of people that feel safe in the community, and it is generally very safe. Our police department does a great job, but you can't let your guard down," said Jeanie Crumpton, an Alamo Heights resident.

Crumpton lives on one of the three streets police say Cox targeted last April.

"Make sure that they get caught, because I wouldn't want them back in the neighborhood doing something like that or doing something worse. It makes me scared because I do have children," she said.

"We'd like to see him picked up and we'd like to serve those warrants," Pruitt said.

Anyone who recognizes Cox or knows his whereabouts is asked to call Alamo Heights police at 210-822-3321.

Cox's three other warrants include two for drug possession with intent to deliver and one for credit or debit card abuse.
