Floresville organization hosts plate sale to support families of Texas church shooting victims

Plates selling until 10 p.m. Saturday

FLORESVILLE, Texas – People in Floresville who supported a barbecue plate fundraiser Saturday got a chance to sample the tastes of 22 cooking teams from all throughout South Texas and help the families of the Sutherland Springs church shooting victims.

“All we wanted to do was show Sutherland Springs that we wanted to support them and whatever they're going through,” said Jeff Moreno, president of Miracles “R” Possible.

The fundraiser was held at the Deleon Event Center in Floresville. Many came with empty stomachs and full hearts.

“When I found out some of the people that had passed, my heart was like, ‘Oh, my gosh,’” said Rebecca Escobedo, vice president of Miracles “R” Possible.

Miracles “R” Possible is an organization based out of Floresville that normally helps disadvantaged families, but the church shooting that left 26 dead and many wounded inspired members to team up with the city to bring in award-winning Texas talent.

“Ruben Ramos, El Gato Negro, Chente Barrera coming in, plus a lot of local bands,” Romero said.

Together with nearly two dozen cooking teams from all over South Texas, everyone volunteered their time and resources.

“It's just the comradery we have. We always like to compete against each other, but at the same time, we'll cheer each other on,” said Robert Sierra, a pit master.

More than 4,000 chicken quarters were grilled up. Several items on the menu were donated by local restaurants and markets.

“When the time of need comes like today, we all pitch in a little bit and do our part,” Sierra said.

Plates are being sold for $8 until 10 p.m. Saturday. Facilitators said they started with enough food for 8,000 plates, and by the looks of it, they’re probably going to sell out.
