A 10-year-old girl won the top prize of Grand Champion Steer at the 2012 San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo on Friday.
A girl of few words, Caeley Jane Cody was thrilled to win.
"I'm excited," she said.
Judges look for a variety of qualities in the animals to name a winner. Cody waited anxiously at the selection got under way. The judge walked near Rabbit and with the "slapping of the bull," selected the steer as the Grand Champion.
Cody's steer, Rabbit, will go to auction at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Junior Livestock Auction. Big scholarship money is involved. Last year's winner raked in $85,250.
Asked what she had to do to win, Cody said there was nothing to it.
"You had to go to the bar a lot and work on them and wash them," she said.
About 1,400 contestants competed for the title. Devon Kreuger said he will be back to compete again.
"I love being with animals and my dad got me into it and I loved it after I got into it," he said.
