10,000 tamales were stuffed, rolled, and packaged up at the JW Marriott Hill Country Resort Tuesday. The large quantity of tamales had been pre-sold.
"The money from these tamales will go to help put food on the table for folks throughout south Texas," said Eric Cooper with the San Antonio Food Bank.
All of the proceeds from the sales are going to the San Antonio Food Bank. The annual event was called the “Tamalathon”. Employees from Marriott spent the day volunteering by making the pre-ordered tamales.
Meanwhile, business was steady at Delicious Tamales in Stone Oak.
"At this point we stopped counting,” said Fernando Juarez of Delicious Tamales. “We just keep making, keep making, and somehow at the end of the day they're all gone."
Juarez said they have been so busy, they’ve have stopped taking orders. They are still, however, serving walk-in customers. For South Texans, eating tamales around Christmas time is time honored tradition.
"We've been doing it ever since I can remember,” said Tess Sarosdy, a customer at Delicious Tamales.
Juarez said the number of customers also seems to be growing year-to-year.
"I think less people are making them themselves and are just like, let’s pick them up, spend a little more time with family.”
