Just a day after 69-year-old James Carrol Spencer, of Canyon Lake, was found dead inside his home, long-time neighbors drove by his home in the 100 block of White Oak, in the Oaks Subdivision, to pay their respects.

They say he was stabbed to death by his grandson; however, investigators have not confirmed how Spencer was killed. And they have yet to confirm if one of the suspects sought in his killing -- 19-year-old Austin Myles Byrom (pictured) -- is, in fact, Spencer's grandson.

A neighbor who did not want to be identified said, "(Byrom) went to school with my son. He was very intelligent in school, so it's kind of tragic to hear somebody would waste their life like that."

She further said that Spencer basically raised his grandson in the home where his body was found. The woman also said their relationship became strained and Byrom was kicked out of the home when his grandfather discovered his grandson was involved with drugs.

Neighbors said the second suspect, 18-year-old Skyler Katherine Burghart, is Byrom's fiancee.

The Comal County Sheriff's Office is looking for Byrom and Burghart, who they said left Spencer's home in a stolen vehicle. It's described as a white Lexus sedan with Texas license plate BZW-7242.

Comal County sheriff’s Lt. Mark Reynolds said other law enforcement agencies are assisting them in finding Spencer’s killers.

"Clearly, there was a vehicle taken that belonged to the victim," he said. "That's the vehicle that we released the detailed information, so we could use any or all help in locating that."

Investigators have confirmed Spencer's wife was home at the time of the murder. They say she was not injured.

Investigators have yet to locate the two suspects. Byrom is from Canyon Lake and Burghart is from San Antonio. Anyone with information on their whereabouts is asked to call police.
